Riptide Recreation

Riptide Music Video Sequence Recreation Analysis Considering this project was a recreation, I will be analysing both the original video and the final product with comparative screenshots from our final video. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? I think Riptide is a great example of a concept-based music video as it is constructed with short clips with a literal relation to the original song. Considering the song itself is quite abstract, it makes sense to have an unusual video sequence. What does challenge the typical conventions of music videos is that the artist isn’t depicted in the video, leaving the first impression of Vance Joy from this video to be a faceless name. A Level Research

I have chosen to focus my brief on Film4 due to the fact I prefer the house-style of their films, and so I have selectively researched Film4 examples of drama so I can develop an understanding of the typical stylisation. Initial Preparation for research By looking at Film4's productions, I think I am going to head in the direction of semi-fictional drama as there seems to be a clear aesthetic that is maintained within the film posters. I also believe drama better fits the bracket of audiences between the years of 18-34 especially on film four which would likely show darker films after the watershed with cynicism and violence perhaps. From what I have seen of Film 4's house style for Drama, they lean towards a trend of colour scheme- grey scales or dark tones with bright accentuations (E.g. Grey and orange.) 50's Advert

50s Advert Recreation Analysis The Target Audience for this advert is both directed towards men and women. For men it is using the idea of Christmas to sell the product as a gift for their wives or other women in their life. I did this by putting stress on ‘her’ and by using an alluring pin-up model to draw in a level of sexual attraction- as if they would want their wife to look like that. Where alternatively I have used direct address listing details most relevant to women, i.e. the application and quality to appeal more to the female demographic. Socially this advert would construct a patriarchal impression as the model is being objectified (perhaps even under Mulvey’s male gaze) to display the product in a doll-like way. The revealed leg is rather sexualised, and the woman is quite reminiscent of Marylin Monroe, an iconic sex symbol throughout the 50s and 60s.
